Taking a big risk, Patrick Cottrell launched Memo Modern Italian and Vudu Tacos this month, turning his former seafood place, Catch 23, into two separate dining spots. Though they share a kitchen, each place draws its own crowd. Vudu serves up quick street tacos, while the fancy Italian spot offers sit-down meals, with prices staying under $28. Cottrell made the change when fish prices skyrocketed in 2019. Even though loyal customers begged to keep their favorite seafood place running, the finances just didn't work out.

“I really had always just wanted (to own) a good, modern Italian restaurant because it's difficult to get or find that around here,” said Cottrell, a former chef who bought Catch 23 in late 2019. Working at The Breakers in Palm Beach influenced Cottrell's cooking style. His experience in Italian kitchens comes through in every dish he serves up.

The heart of the kitchen features a custom-built Italian oven. This workhorse pumps out both classic recipes and fresh takes on traditional favorites. House-made pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and hand-picked meat boards now fill the Italian menu.

People can grab a spot at the modern bar for drinks and appetizers. The taco spot looks to set itself apart in a busy market. Unlike places such as Tijuana Flats, which recently had a location close in that same plaza, Vudu puts its own spin on authentic street food.

The drink menu pairs well with the food. Guests can sample various small plates instead of ordering full entrees, making each visit different.

This dual concept proves business savvy. One kitchen handles two crowds, cutting overhead while reaching twice the customers.

Both restaurants are open from 4-10pm Monday-Thursday, 4-11pm Friday, 11am-11pm Saturday (with brunch options till 3pm), and 11am-9pm on Sunday (with brunch options till 3pm).
