El incidente mortal ocurrió el 3 de mayo, cuando durante una tormenta un rayo impactó mortalmente a dos jirafas Lily de 10 años y Jioni de tan solo 1 año, según Lion Country Safari en Loxahatchee, cerca de West Palm Beach. Ese Parque Natural tenía 20 jirafas antes del incidente, y lo describen como un parque de diversiones y safari en automóvil.
